Fraud Prevention & Identity Theft

Citizens Bank of Rogersville wants to help you to protect yourself against online schemes. E-mail fraud is one of the more common and damaging methods used to scam customers on the Internet today. By educating yourself and following some simple tips you'll be less likely to fall victim to one of these schemes.

Citizens Bank of Rogersville will never ask for you to send personal or financial information by, in response to, or via a link in an e-mail.

Two of the most common schemes are:

  1. Phishing: These are forged e-mails purporting to be from someone (an individual orcompany) you know and trust attempting to get you to reveal sensitive informationlike user IDs, passwords, account numbers or other sensitive data. Criminals will usethis data to access your accounts, financial information and/or your identity.
  2. Spoofing: Typically the forged e-mails ask you to supply, confirm, or update personal information by clicking on a link in the e-mail. The link will connect you to a webpage or login that appears to belong to the company mentioned in the e-mail. This is referred to as a "spoofed" site. Often the site looks just like the company's site. The spoof may even be a pop up or an embedded image over the actual site. The goal of the criminals is to get you to enter your personal data so they can steal your information.

What can I do to protect my ATM/Debit Card?

  1. Always keep you card in a safe place.
  2. Always sign the back of your card so that your signature can be authenticated.
  3. NEVER write your PIN on your card or anything carried with your card. Memorize your PIN. If you need a copy of your PIN, write it down, keep it seperated from your card and don't identify it as your PIN.
  4. Never give out your numbers, especially over the phone, unless you initiate the call. Do not use your debit card for recurring payments (i.e. AOL or Wal-Mart Connect).
  5. Take your receipt with you. Keep track of all your expenses and check them against your monthly account statement to ensure all transactions listed are legitimate.
  6. Write down the toll-free number that you should contact if you card is lost or stolen, and keep it with you , but separate from your card.

What should I do if my ATM/Debit card is lost or stolen?

If you find that your card is missing, report it immediately to Citizens Bank of Rogersville @ 417-753-2836 or call Fiserv EFT @ 1-800-554-8969.

IDENTITY THEFT

Did you know that you are more vulnerable to identity theft via physical theft of bank account information and social security numbers than you are to Internet fraud techniques such as phishing? A recent FDIC "to do list for reducing ID Theft risk included an item called "Keep your financial trash 'clean'. This means that you should avoid discarding intact bank statements and other documents in your trash which show your account numbers, etc.

The new Internet banking feature here at the Citizens Bank of Rogersville allow you to review your monthly statement (images, however, are not available on the internet) and give you an alternative to receiving your statement in the mail each month. The mailed statement should always be either filed/retained by you or destroyed by shredding or similar destruction before discarding in your trash.

If you are already reviewing your statement on the internet or would like to begin using the internet banking feature for that activity and should desire to discontinue having your statement mailed to you by the bank please contact Scott Green or Christie Davis, at 417-753-2836.
